“Thanks to the extraordinary work of our soldiers engaged day and night in the context of the Aquila Omnia operation, we have evacuated many Afghan citizens, among them 1,301 women and 1,453 children. With the flight of the C130J of our Air Force, which departed this afternoon from Kabul, a difficult and complex operation is concluded which has seen 1,500 Italian soldiers guaranteeing the airlift to Italy with high professionalism and humanity. Our Armed Forces deserve the applause for having conducted this massive and delicate evacuation, resulting from the rapid worsening of the political and social crisis in Afghanistan. ” – announced the Undersecretary of Defense, Stefania Pucciarelli on the occasion of today’s completion of the Interforze Aquila Omnia operation.
“There remain strong concerns about the preservation and protection of the rights won with so much effort and great courage by Afghan citizens over the past 20 years. It is therefore necessary to work to implement every useful initiative to protect the human and fundamental rights of Afghans, especially the weakest, with particular attention to women and civil society. The desired goal is to promote educational training opportunities at all levels, encouraging humanitarian and development cooperation initiatives. Among the categories most at risk in Afghan society, women in particular are at serious risk of once again being victims of profound discrimination and terrible violence. We must work to ensure that the rights won by Afghan citizens in recent years are not wiped out with a swipe of the sponge by the re-establishing Taliban regime. In this sense, I am sure that the international community will keep the spotlight on Afghanistan well. A country battered by long sufferings that is in particular need of help and that seriously risks becoming a sanctuary for jihadist formations. ” – concluded Undersecretary Pucciarelli.
